New Zealand enterprises are experiencing increased usage of their Wide Area Networks (WAN) through new applications such as video conferencing and VoIP, which are layered on top of the business's existing data demands. This growth in dependency results in a larger component of ICT spend being absorbed by these additional WAN costs, with no guaranteed return.
MPA's experience is that this growth has stimulated many organisations to look more closely at how their network links are actually utilized, to determine if there are any types of traffic that can be removed or re-prioritised to reduce costs. Historically the only way to gain application level visibility has been through deploying expensive network sniffers, WAN appliances or via 3rd party management contracts from Telco providers.
For an enterprise to achieve this level of visibility and to determine who is generating the traffic, our experts recommend implementing Fluke Networks NetFlow Tracker. This is the simplest and lowest cost mechanism to harness the existing capability in switches and routers, exporting Netflow or another IPfix equivalent of network flow, to provide a clear report of network ulitisation.
In New Zealand, organisations such as Contact Energy and ASB have implemented Fluke Networks Netflow Tracker. In ASBs case they have determined that through using Netflow Tracker they have been able to reduce network costs by $15,000 per month.
